Kaye Poulton Ceramic Artist

Kaye began working with clay in the late seventies in Kerang enjoying the malleability and endless possibilities of this wonderful material.

In 1987,   Kaye completed a diploma of fine arts in Ceramics at Bendigo TAFE. This involved commuting from Kerang to Bendigo several times a week, a two hour drive. As well as learning the finer aspects of construction and wheel work, she was introduced to glaze and firing techniques including raku firing which has continued to this day.

Kaye enjoys making work on the potter’s wheel as well as hand formed figurative and sculptural work. She make my own glazes from raw materials and enjoys the challenge of the alchemist, constantly adapting and modifying glazes until they create the right surface and finish for her pieces.

The Landscape is an important subject of many of Kaye’s wheel thrown forms. Sometimes she uses brush strokes and sgraffito technique scratching through the surface and revealing the clay, other times pouring the liquid glaze in repeated coats to form the shapes and colours that the form dictates. These pieces are fired to 1300 degrees centigrade in a gas down draught kiln.

Kaye’s studio is in Mooroopna near the Goulburn River. She teaches at Shepparton Art Museum. Her work can also be found in Shepparton Art Museum, Craft Victoria, Bendigo Pottery, The Whistle Stop Gallery Echuca, Corner Store Art Gallery(Orange), Rustik Cafe & Foodstore(Benalla) and The Sweet Meadow Restaurant in Echuca.
